Discernment no be optional thing for believer; na survival tool for world wey full with voices, influences, and spiritual currents. Acts 16:16 show one serious moment for Paul ministry: this young girl talk words wey sound true, but the spirit behind the words no be Spirit of God. Her statement — “These men na servants of the Most High God” — correct, but the spirit behind am corrupt. This teach us one sobering truth: no be every voice wey sound spiritual na from God.

I dey talk with one minister this week wey make me wonder how often we no dey check the spirit wey dey operate around us.

If we no question the spirit, how we go know who dey talk? Because true words fit come from wrong spirit, as we see for Acts 16. The girl no lie. She announce Paul and Silas correctly. But Paul, as e dey grieve for spirit, discern say the source dey demonic. This na why 1 John 4:1 warn us say, “Beloved, no believe every spirit, but test the spirits whether dem be of God.” The danger no always dey for wetin dem talk, but for who dey talk am and why.

Satan na master for camouflage. For Genesis 3, e no come with bold lie; e come with twisted question. For Matthew 4, e quote Scripture to Jesus, but with corrupt intention. Discernment na the ability to hear beyond words and perceive the spirit behind them.

Discernment protect your assignment. Paul and Silas dey go prayer when the girl intercept them. Distraction sometimes dey dress like affirmation. The enemy no always dey oppose with hostility; sometimes e dey use flattery, noise, or unnecessary attention. If Paul accept her words as face value, the demonic spirit fit gain legitimacy among the people. But Paul no gree allow wrong spirit attach itself to right mission.

Discernment no be suspicion. Na spiritual clarity. Na the ability to sense when something no just sit well, even when everything look right. Proverbs 14:12 remind us say, “It get way wey look right to man, but the end of am na destruction.”

We must question every spirit—even the familiar ones. Sometimes the most dangerous voices na the ones we don dey used to. Peter love Jesus deeply, yet for Matthew 16:22–23, Jesus rebuke am sharp, “Get behind me, Satan.” Jesus no call Peter Satan; He dey address the spirit wey dey influence Peter words.

This show us say: Person fit love you and still talk from wrong spirit. Familiar voice fit carry unfamiliar influence. Good intention still fit dey spiritually misaligned. This na why believers must develop sensitivity to the Holy Spirit. Discernment no be gift for prophets alone; na necessity for every of God pikin.

Hebrews 5:14 solid food na for mature pipol and dem get betta sense to know wetin dey good and bad. Simply put, discernment need spiritual maturity.

Discernment dey grow through consistent prayer, soaking in Scripture, obeying the Holy Spirit, and practicing spiritual sensitivity.

Paul discern the girl spirit because e dey spiritually alert. Prayerless believer na believer wey lack discernment. Distracted believer na easy target for deception.

When Paul command the spirit make e comot from the girl for Acts 16:18, the whole atmosphere change. The enemy lose him platform. The girl get freedom. The city shake.

Discernment no just dey protect you; e dey free others too, because when you question the spirit, you expose the enemy. You break hidden manipulation. You silence deceptive voices. You protect your spiritual territory, and you preserve the purity of your walk with God.

The enemy dey thrive for space wey nobody challenge am. But when believer rise with discernment, darkness go lose influence.

REFLECTION QUESTIONS

·       Where for my life I don accept voices, influences, or patterns without testing their spiritual source?

·       How I fit grow for spiritual sensitivity so I fit discern truth from almost-truth?

·       Which distractions or false affirmations fit be wetin enemy dey use to carry me comot from my spiritual assignment?

PRAYER: Father, open my eyes make I fit see beyond surface. Sharpen my spirit make I discern Your voice from every other voice. Deliver me from deception, distraction, and spiritual confusion. Fill me with the wisdom, clarity, and sensitivity of the Holy Spirit. Make every wrong influence expose and comot from my life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
