PIDGIN SELF‑ERECTED BARRIERS!
2 Korintian 10:5 “pipol wey dey karry body up; doz wey nor wont make odas know God and as wi dey do like dis, pipol dey obey Christ.
Some of the biggest obstacle
wey dey our spiritual journey no be the mountain wey dey front us, but the
quiet wall wey we dey build inside ourselves. These self‑erected barriers no dey
appear one time. Dem dey rise small small —
shaped by fear, unbelief, pride, old wounds, or the desire to still dey control
everything. Yet these inner walls fit block God move for our lives pass any
outside enemy. Scripture show us again and again say God dey willing, ready,
and able to lead His people forward, but His people too often dey limit Him
through the boundaries wey dem build for their own heart.
One of the clearest examples
dey for Numbers 13–14. Israel stand for the edge of the Promised Land. God don
already talk. The land na their own. Him presence dey with them. Him power don
already show itself many times. Yet the people build barrier of fear. Dem say,
“We no fit… the giants too strong… we be like grasshopper.” God no call dem
grasshopper; dem call themselves so. Their inner talk become wall wey block
their obedience. Fear become fortress, and dem remain outside the promise for
forty years. The land no be the problem. The giants no be the problem. Their
self‑erected barrier of unbelief
na the problem.
Another barrier we dey build
na self‑protection. Plenty believers
dey long for closeness with God but still dey keep Am far because of past
disappointment. The Samaritan woman for John 4 don build emotional walls after
many broken relationships. When Jesus offer her living water, she answer with
caution, deflection, and theological argument. Her heart don learn to hide. Yet
Jesus gently tear down her barriers by revealing truth, offering grace, and
calling her into freedom. Her story remind us say God no dey condemn us because
of our walls — He just no go leave us for behind the wall.
Pride na another subtle but
powerful barrier. E dey whisper, “I fit handle am… I no need help… I know wetin
I dey do.” King Saul na serious example. For 1 Samuel 15, God give am clear
instruction, but Saul build barrier of self‑will.
He obey small, justify himself, and protect him image instead of am to obey.
Pride build wall between him and God voice, and last-last, he no fit hear God
again. Pride dey isolate. E dey blind. E dey make us believe say our way safer
pass surrender. But Scripture warn us say, “God resist the proud but give grace
to the humble” (James 4:6). When we build wall of pride, we dey position ourselves
against the grace we need most.
Sometimes the barrier na
shame. Adam and Eve hide from God for Genesis 3, no be because God reject them,
but because dem reject themselves. Shame dey convince us say God no fit love
us, use us, or forgive us. E build prison of silence and secrecy. But God first
question to Adam na— “Where you dey?”— no be condemnation. Na invitation. God
always dey move toward us, even when we hide behind the walls we build.
Other times, the barrier na
overthinking. We dey analyse, calculate, and reason ourselves out of obedience.
We want guarantee before we step out. But faith seldom come with guarantee.
Abraham obey God “not knowing where he dey go” (Hebrews 11:8). If he wait for
full clarity, he for miss destiny. Overthinking dey feel wise, but often e dey
rooted for fear. E dey keep us safe, but stagnant. Comfortable, but no bearing
fruit.
Self‑erected barriers dey
dangerous because dem dey feel justified, protective, and necessary. But dem
dey keep us from the fullness of God purpose. Dem dey limit our prayers, obedience,
relationships, and spiritual growth. Dem dey make us dey circle same mountain
year after year. Yet the good news be this: every wall we build fit come down
by the truth of God Word and the power of His Spirit.
God dey invite us make we
surrender our barriers, no be to expose us, but to free us. He wan lead us
enter the Promised Land of purpose, healing, intimacy, and bold obedience. But
He no go force Himself enter wall wey we choose to maintain. The moment we open
the door, even if na small, Him grace go rush enter.
Today, the Holy Spirit dey
ask gently: Which wall you don build? Which barrier you don normalize? Which fear or belief don stop you from stepping into more? God no dey intimidated by
your walls. He just want permission to tear them down.
