QUESTION EVERY SPIRIT!
Acts 16:16 AMPC
As we were on our way to the
place of prayer, we were met by a slave girl who was possessed by a spirit of
divination [claiming to foretell future events and to discover hidden
knowledge], and she brought her owners much gain by her fortunetelling.
Discernment is not optional
for the believer; it is a survival tool in a world filled with voices,
influences, and spiritual currents. Acts 16:16 presents a striking moment in
Paul’s ministry: “And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a certain damsel possessed
with a spirit of divination met us…” This young girl spoke words that sounded
true, yet the source behind her utterance was not the Spirit of God. Her
proclamation— “These men are servants of the Most High God”—was accurate, but
the spirit behind it was corrupt. This teaches us a sobering truth: not every
voice that sounds spiritual is from God.
I had a conversation with a
minister this week that led me to wonder how often we don’t check the spirit operation
around us.
If we don’t question the
spirit, how do we know who’s speaking? Because truthful words can come from a wrong
spirit as we see in Acts 16. The girl was not lying. She was announcing Paul
and Silas correctly. But Paul, being grieved in his spirit, discerned that the
source was demonic. This is why 1 John 4:1 warns, “Beloved, believe not every
spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God.” The danger is not always
in what is said, but in who is saying it and why.
Satan is a master of
camouflage. In Genesis 3, he did not approach Eve with a blatant lie; he
approached her with a twisted question. In Matthew 4, he quoted Scripture to
Jesus, but with a corrupted intention. Discernment is the ability to hear
beyond the words and perceive the spirit behind them.
Discernment protects your assignment.
Paul and Silas were on their way to prayer when the girl intercepted them.
Distraction often comes dressed as affirmation. The enemy does not always
oppose with hostility; sometimes he opposes with flattery, noise, or
unnecessary attention. If Paul had accepted her words at face value, the
demonic spirit would have gained legitimacy among the people. But Paul refused
to allow a wrong spirit to attach itself to a right mission.
Discernment is not
suspicion. It is spiritual clarity. It is the ability to sense when something
is “off,” even if everything looks right. Proverbs 14:12 reminds us, “There is
a way that seems right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.”
We must question every spirit—even
the familiar ones! Sometimes the most dangerous voices are the ones we have
grown used to. Peter loved Jesus deeply, yet in Matthew 16:22–23, Jesus rebuked
him sharply: “Get thee behind me, Satan.” Jesus was not calling Peter Satan; He
was addressing the spirit influencing Peter’s words.
This shows us that: A person
can love you and still speak from a wrong spirit. A familiar voice can carry an
unfamiliar influence. A good intention can still be spiritually misaligned. This
is why believers must cultivate sensitivity to the Holy Spirit. Discernment is
not a gift for prophets alone; it is a necessity for every child of God.
Hebrews 5:14 says, “But
strong meat belongs to them that are of full age… who by reason of use have
their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.” Simply put, discernment requires spiritual maturity.
Discernment grows through consistent
prayer, immersion in Scripture, obedience to the Holy Spirit and practicing
spiritual sensitivity.
Paul discerned the girl’s
spirit because he was spiritually alert. A prayerless believer is a discernment‑less believer. A distracted
believer is an easily deceived believer.
When Paul commanded the
spirit to come out of the girl in Acts 16:18, the entire atmosphere shifted.
The enemy lost his platform. The girl was set free. The city was shaken.
Discernment does not just
protect you; it liberates others because when you Question the spirit, you expose
the enemy. You break hidden manipulations. You silence deceptive voices. You
protect your spiritual territory, and you preserve the purity of your walk with
God.
The enemy thrives in
unchallenged spaces. But when a believer rises in discernment, darkness loses
its influence.
REFLECTION QUESTIONS
· Where
in my life have I accepted voices, influences, or patterns without testing
their spiritual source?
· How
can I grow in spiritual sensitivity so I can discern between truth and almost‑truth?
· What
distractions or affirmations might the enemy be using to divert me from my
spiritual assignment?
PRAYER: Father, open my eyes
to see beyond the surface. Sharpen my spirit to discern Your voice from every
other voice. Deliver me from deception, distraction, and spiritual confusion.
Fill me with the wisdom, clarity, and sensitivity of the Holy Spirit. Let every
wrong influence be exposed and removed from my life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
