THE LAMB’S BOOK OF LIFE!
Revelation 20:12 Voice
And I saw the dead, great
and small, standing in front of the throne. Some books were opened. Then
another book was opened; it was called the book of life. And the dead were
judged according to what had been recorded in the first books; these were the
records of everything they had done.
Scripture paints a sobering
yet hope-filled picture of the final judgment. In our text, John writes, “And I
saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened… and
another book was opened, which is the book of life.” This moment reveals a
profound truth: every human life is recorded, but only one book determines eternal
destiny—the Lamb’s book of life, belonging to Jesus Christ, the Lamb slain from
the foundation of the world according to Revelation 13:8.
The Lamb’s Book of Life is
not a symbolic idea; it is a spiritual reality. It contains the names of those
who have received Christ, believed in His salvation, and surrendered to His
lordship. It is the register of the redeemed, the citizens of God’s eternal
kingdom. To have one’s name written in this book is the highest honour, the
greatest security, and the most precious inheritance anyone can possess.
In ancient times, cities
kept official registers of citizens. If someone committed treason or abandoned
their loyalty, their name could be erased. John’s audience understood this
imagery well. These are books for identity and belonging, but the Lamb’s Book
of Life is different. It is not maintained by human hands but by the mercy and
righteousness of God. Jesus told His disciples, “Rejoice because your names are
written in heaven” in Luke 10:20. Their identity was not rooted in ministry
success, miracles, or spiritual gifts, but in belonging to God.
This belonging is not earned
by works. It is received by faith. Paul writes, “By grace you have been saved
through faith… not of works” in Ephesians 2:8–9. The Lamb’s Book of Life is a
book of grace—names written not because of human perfection but because of
Christ’s perfect sacrifice.
Acts 16:13–15 gives us a
living example of how a name enters this book. Lydia: a picture of a heart
opened by God. Paul meets Lydia, a worshipper of God, who was religious,
sincere, and morally upright, yet her heart still needed divine intervention.
Scripture says, “The Lord opened her heart to heed the things spoken by Paul.”
Salvation is always a work of God’s mercy. Lydia listened, believed, and was
baptised—an outward sign of an inward transformation.
Her story shows that
salvation is not accidental. God draws, opens, convicts, and awakens. The Lamb
writes names in His book when hearts respond to His call. Lydia’s immediate
hospitality— “If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my
house”—reveals the fruit of a transformed life. Salvation always produces
evidence: obedience, generosity, and devotion.
Revelation 20 confronts us
with eternal reality. The books of deeds are opened, but they cannot save.
Human righteousness, achievements, and religious activities cannot qualify
anyone for eternal life. Only one book matters in that moment—the Lamb’s Book
of Life. John writes, “Anyone not found written in the book of life was cast
into the lake of fire” in Revelation 20:15. This is not meant to terrify
believers but to awaken urgency, gratitude, and holy living.
If your name is written in
the Lamb’s Book of Life, it should shape how you live today. It calls you to:
- Walk in holiness because
you belong to God (1 Peter 1:15–16).
- Stand firm in faith,
knowing your eternal future is secure (John 10:28).
- Share the gospel because
God desires all to be saved (1 Timothy 2:4).
- Live with hope because
your citizenship is in heaven (Philippians 3:20).
The Lamb’s Book of Life is
not just about the future; it is about identity, purpose, and mission now. It
reminds us that life is more than earthly success. It is about being known by
God, loved by Christ, and sealed by the Spirit.
For the believer, this truth
brings deep comfort: “He who overcomes shall be clothed in white garments, and
I will not blot out his name from the Book of Life” according to Revelation 3:5.
Christ Himself guarantees the security of those who remain faithful. Your name
is not written in pencil but in the blood of the Lamb.
This is the final word of
assurance of Christ!
