WHAT ELSE DO I HAVE?

Judges 18:24 GNT

Micah answered, "What do you mean, 'What's the matter?' You take my priest and the gods that I made, and walk off What have I got left?"

God is and should be our only anchor!

In Judges 18:24, Micah confronts the Danites with a desperate cry: “You have taken away my gods, and priest. And what else do I have?” His words echo with loss, fear, and the painful realization that everything he depended on was fragile. His “gods” could be stolen. His priest could be taken. His security could vanish in a moment.

What else do I have”– a sad, pathetic thing for a man of Israel to say. Israel was the nation in covenant relationship with the one true God. And it is a sad thing that some people still have nothing but idols and priests, for this means they have nothing at all.

Micah’s lament exposes a deeper truth: anything we build outside of God can be taken from us, but what God gives cannot be stolen.

When life happens, it may strip us bare. There are moments when life feels like it has emptied our hands. A job ends. A relationship breaks. A dream collapses. A season shifts unexpectedly. And like Micah, we whisper, “What else do I have?”

But Micah’s question reveals the weakness of his foundation. His gods were handmade. His priest was hired. His security was selfconstructed. When the structures of selfreliance collapse, we discover whether our hope was anchored in God or in things that merely looked like Him.

Psalm 20:7 reminds us that “Some trust in chariots, and some in horses; but we will remember the name of the Lord our God.” and Psalm 27:1 declares that “The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?”

When what we built is shaken, what God built remains, when God is our only answer.

There is a holy place where the soul stands before God with empty hands—and finds that emptiness is not a curse but an invitation. When everything else is stripped away, we discover the treasure we never lost, God Himself.

Job understood this. After losing everything, he declared: “The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.” in Job 1:21. Job’s worship was not rooted in possessions but in the Person of God.

David understood this. Pursued, betrayed, and exhausted, he cried: “Whom have I in heaven but You? And there is none upon earth that I desire besides You.” in Psalm 73:25.

Paul understood this. Imprisoned and beaten, he wrote: “I count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord.” in Philippians 3:8.

When God becomes our only answer, we discover He is more than enough.

Sometimes God allows what we cling to be removed—not to punish us, but to free us. Micah’s loss exposed the emptiness of his idols. Our losses often expose the places where our trust has drifted. And so, loss becomes a doorway to mercy.

But God never leaves us in the ruins. His mercy meets us there.

- He restored Job with double.

- He strengthened David until he became king.

- He transformed Paul into a worldshaking apostle.

- He rebuilt Peter after failure.

- He revived Naomi after bitterness.

Loss is not the end. It is often the beginning of a deeper revelation of God’s mercy.

God whispers through the rubble: “You still have Me—and having Me, you have everything.”

Have we ever considered what we truly have in God?

When we ask, “What else do I have?” heaven answers:

- You have a Father who never leaves (Deuteronomy 31:6)

- You have a Shepherd who restores your soul (Psalm 23:3)

- You have a Savior who intercedes for you (Hebrews 7:25)

- You have the Spirit who strengthens you (Ephesians 3:16)

- You have promises that cannot fail (2 Corinthians 1:20)

- You have a hope that cannot be shaken (Hebrews 6:19)

Everything else may shift, but God remains.

And when God is your portion, you are never empty.

REFLECTION QUESTIONS

·       Where have I unknowingly placed my security in things that can be taken from me?

·       How has God used seasons of loss or transition to draw me closer to Him?

·       What does it mean for me personally to say, “God is my portion”?

PRAYER: Father, when life shakes the things, I hold onto, anchor me in You. Strip away every false security and draw my heart into deeper trust. Be my portion, my strength, and my unshakable foundation. Teach me to say with confidence, “Whom have I in heaven but You?” In every season, let me find that You are enough. Amen.
