CHILD-FRIENDLY REWRITE MY NAME!
Ezra 2:59-62 GNT
There were 652 belonging to
the clans of Delaiah, Tobiah, and Nekoda who returned from the towns of Tel
Melah, Tel Harsha, Cherub, Addan, and Immer; but they could not prove that they
were descendants of Israelites. [61-62] The following priestly clans could find
no record to prove their ancestry: Habaiah, Hakkoz, and Barzillai. (The
ancestor of the priestly clan of Barzillai had married a woman from the clan of
Barzillai of Gilead and had taken the name of his father-in-law's clan.) Since
they were unable to prove who their ancestors were, they were not accepted as
priests.
To rewrite something means
to write it again so it becomes better or correct. Sometimes a name is changed
because it was spelled wrongly, written wrongly, or needs to be improved. A
name is important because it carries meaning, history, and identity. In the
Bible, names often showed a person’s character or purpose. That is why a
damaged name can feel painful, and a restored name can feel like hope.
Sometimes people feel like
their name or reputation has been hurt. Proverbs 22:1 says a good name is more
valuable than riches. There are many reasons someone may want a new name. Some
names are changed because of marriage, adoption, mistakes, or because someone
wants a fresh start.
When we give our lives to
Jesus, He rewrites our identity. According to 2 Corinthians 5:16–17, anyone who
belongs to Christ becomes a new person. This means we are no longer defined by
our past, our mistakes, or the labels people gave us. Jesus gives us a new name
and a new identity.
In Ezra 2, some families
could not prove their names or where they came from. Imagine looking for your
family records and finding nothing. That can feel confusing or sad. But God
knows every name, even when people forget.
Some people choose names for
the wrong reasons, like the priest who preferred the name of Barzillai’s family
instead of his own. He lost the special place God gave him because he valued
the wrong name.
When Jesus died and rose
again, our old names died too. We are no longer called sinner or broken. Our
names are written in the Book of Life (Philippians 4:3). God can rewrite your
name and your story.
