IT’S NOT YOUR FEELING!
2 Corinthians 5:7 AMPC
For we walk by faith [we
regulate our lives and conduct ourselves by our conviction or belief respecting
man's relationship to God and divine things, with trust and holy fervor; thus
we walk] not by sight or appearance.
There are moments in the
Christian journey when your feelings scream louder than your faith. You wake up
heavy, discouraged, anxious, or numb — and nothing in you “feels” spiritual,
victorious, or strong. Yet one of the most liberating truths God instructs His
children is that your feelings are not your foundation. They are real, but they
are not the truth. They are loud, but they are not the voice you follow. They
fluctuate, but God does not.
When Scripture says, “The
just shall live by faith” in Romans 1:17, it's not describing a life led by
emotional weather patterns. Faith is not a feeling; faith is a decision
anchored in the unchanging character of God. Feelings are indicators, not
dictators. They may reveal your humanity, but they do not define your reality
in Christ.
Think of Elijah in 1 Kings
19. This was a prophet who had just called down fire from heaven, defeated the
prophets of Baal, and witnessed a national turning point. Yet one threat from
Jezebel sent him spiralling into fear, exhaustion, and despair. He even prayed
to die. His feelings told him he was alone, overwhelmed, and finished — but
none of those feelings were true. God responded not by validating the emotion,
but by correcting the perception: “I have reserved seven thousand in Israel…”
(1 Kings 19:18). Elijah felt alone, but he wasn’t. He felt finished, but he
wasn’t. He felt abandoned, but he wasn’t. His feelings were loud, but they were
lying.
David experienced the same
tension. In Psalm 42:5 he asks himself, “Why are you cast down, O my soul?” He
felt discouraged, forgotten, and overwhelmed — yet he commanded his soul to
hope in God. David understood something powerful: your soul can feel one thing
while your spirit knows another. Maturity is choosing what your spirit knows
over what your soul feels.
Jesus Himself demonstrated
this in Gethsemane. His soul was “exceedingly sorrowful, even unto death” in
Matthew 26:38. He felt the weight of the cross, the agony of separation, and
the pressure of obedience. Yet He prayed, “Not my will, but Yours be done.” If
Jesus had followed His feelings, salvation would never have happened. Instead,
He followed the Father’s will above the emotional storm.
This is why Scripture
repeatedly commands us to stand, believe, trust, and hold fast — not because we
always feel like it, but because obedience is stronger than emotion. Your
feelings are temporary; God’s Word is eternal.
When fear rises, Isaiah
41:10 reminds you to: “Fear not, for I am with you.”
When anxiety whispers,
Philippians 4:6‑7
declares peace over you.
When loneliness presses in,
Hebrews 13:5 assures you: “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”
When weakness overwhelms, 2
Corinthians 12:9 says His grace is sufficient.
None of these truths depend
on how you feel. They depend on who God is.
Consider Peter walking on
water in Matthew 14. As long as his eyes were on Jesus, he walked in the
supernatural. But the moment he shifted his attention to the wind and waves —
the moment he allowed his feelings to interpret his reality — he began to sink.
Jesus didn’t say, “Peter, your feelings are valid.” He said, “Why did you
doubt?” The sinking didn’t come from the storm; it came from misplaced focus.
Feelings become dangerous when they become your lens.
This is why Ephesians 6:16
calls faith a shield. Feelings cannot shield you — they expose you. Faith
protects you. Faith steadies you. Faith reminds you that God’s Word is truer
than your emotions, your circumstances, and your perceptions.
So, when you feel unloved —
remember, you are chosen says Ephesians 1:4.
When you feel defeated —
remember, you are more than a conqueror says Romans 8:37.
When you feel forgotten —
remember, your name is engraved on His palms says Isaiah 49:16.
When you feel overwhelmed —
remember, He is your refuge and strength say Psalm 46:1.
Your feelings may be loud,
but they are not Lord.
Your emotions may fluctuate,
but your identity does not.
Your heart may tremble, but
your foundation is unshakeable.
Faith is not the absence of
feeling; it is the refusal to be ruled by it. You honour God not by feeling
strong, but by trusting Him when you don’t. You win not by emotional certainty,
but by spiritual obedience. You rise not because you want to rise, but because
resurrection power lives in you.
REFLECTION QUESTIONS
· Which
emotions most often try to control your decisions, and what truth from
Scripture confronts them?
· Can
you identify a moment when your feelings lied to you? What did God show you
afterward?
· What
practical steps can you take to shift your focus from your feelings to God’s
Word?
PRAYER: Father, teach me to
walk by faith and not by feelings. When my emotions rise like storms, anchor me
in Your truth. Help me recognise when my feelings are lying and strengthen me
to choose Your Word above my perceptions in Jesus’ name, amen.
