REWRITE MY NAME!
Ezra 2:59-62 Voice
But not everyone was readily
accepted into Jerusalem. These people returned to Jerusalem from the Babylonian
provinces of Tel-melah, Tel-harsha, Cherub, Addan, and Immer: the descendants
of Delaiah, Tobiah, and Nekoda (652). These people could not produce
genealogies to prove their identities as Israelites. [61] Three priestly
lines-the descendants of Habaiah, Hakkoz, and Barzillai (so called because he
married a daughter of Barzillai the Gileadite)- [62] could not be located in
their genealogies. Therefore they were considered ritually impure and excluded
from the priesthood in case they should taint the Lord's new temple.
Rewriting means writing
something again to alter or improve it, perhaps because it was spelled
incorrectly, written wrongly, or needs to be modified by adding an extra
letter, a hyphen, or another name to double-barrel an existing name.
A name carries meaning,
history, and identity. In Scripture, names often revealed a person’s character,
assignment, or season in life. That is why a damaged name can feel like a
wounded future, and a restored name can feel like hope returning. When God steps
into a person’s story, He does not merely cover shame; He redeems, restores,
and gives new significance to what once seemed broken.
Do you need to rewrite your
name, or have it rewritten, because something happened to damage your name?
According to Proverbs 22:1, a good name is more desirable than great riches and
more precious than costly perfume.
Why might you need to
rewrite your name? The need for a new name can arise for several reasons, and
it is perfectly legal to change a name that is considered unsuitable or simply
to choose something new and different.
We are all responsible for
maintaining family posterity, especially where family names are concerned. We
must make every effort to protect and preserve the good reputation of a
well-honoured name so that its legacy continues.
According to 2 Corinthians
5:16-17, our names, identities, and destinies are rewritten when we become
followers of Christ, making us brand-new people. As believers, it is therefore
our duty and responsibility to protect and preserve the purity of our new name.
This means that in Christ we
are not prisoners of old verdicts, family failures, or the labels men have
placed upon us. The Lord can break the power of rejection, disgrace, and false
identity. He calls us by purpose, not by pain; by redemption, not by regret.
When we agree with what God says about us, we begin to walk with greater
confidence, purity, and spiritual authority.
Are you in need of a
rewritten name? What happened that has made you feel the need to rewrite your
name? Has the enemy created situations that have caused your name, identity,
and destiny to be damaged? No matter what has happened, Jesus can still rewrite
your name.
Every effort was made to
preserve and protect the purity of the Israelite family line to ensure the
continuity of God’s people. Yet a few groups, including some priests, could not
prove that their families were legitimate Israelites.
Can you imagine searching
records for registration and proof of your family name and lineage, only to
find nothing? Some names are lost through marriage, adoption, crime, and
immigration, while others are rewritten because of misspellings and mispronunciations.
What category do you fall
into if you need your name to be rewritten?
The priest, recognising the
truth of Proverbs 22:1, was quick to hold on to the good name of the children
of Barzillai, whose daughters they had married. He preferred that name to his
own family name, considering it nobler to relate to that family than to belong
to the house of Levi. Yet, through this worldly ambition, he forfeited the
dignity and privileges of the priesthood that God had given him.
This is like many believers
today who have forfeited the names the Lord gave them to accept the lesser
names the enemy wants them to carry.
When a relationship breaks
down and leads to separation or divorce, a person may choose to rewrite their
name to reflect what it once was, or to reclaim a different sense of identity.
When Christ died, we died
with Him according to Romans 6:8-10, and we also rose with Him. At that point,
our names were rewritten to match our new identity in Christ. Though we still
answer to our given names, we are no longer known as sinner, adulterer,
murderer, criminal, or anything else we once were before Christ, because our
names have not only been rewritten, but, more importantly, they are written in
the Book of Life according to Philippians 4:3.
We can rewrite our names and
history with the flick of a pen physically, or through a simple prayer of faith
spiritually. If you need this, ask the Lord for the grace and opportunity to
rewrite your name.
Therefore, do not settle for
the name that pain, failure, sin, or people have tried to give you. Bring every
broken identity before the Lord and allow Him to speak again over your life. He
is still the God who changes stories, restores honour, and gives beauty for
ashes. If your name has been associated with sorrow, disappointment, or
reproach, God is able to rewrite the testimony of your life for His glory.
