THE COVENANT KEEPER!
Genesis 17:2 AMPC
And I will make My covenant
(solemn pledge) between Me and you and will multiply you exceedingly.
God is a covenant keeper.
Throughout Scripture, the covenants of God reveal His unchanging character and
His deep commitment to humanity. A covenant is not a casual promise; it is a
solemn, binding agreement initiated and upheld by God Himself. These divine
covenants define how God relates to mankind and form a unifying thread that
runs through the entire Bible.
Biblical covenants are
promises God makes with people, often accompanied by expectations such as
faith, obedience, repentance, and righteousness. Yet even when human
responsibility is involved, the weight of the covenant rests on God’s
faithfulness, not human perfection. At the heart of every covenant relationship
is God’s declaration in Genesis 17:7: “I will be their God, and they shall be
My people”. This statement captures God’s desire for relationship, belonging,
and divine commitment.
Genesis 17 reveals God
establishing an everlasting covenant with Abraham and his descendants. God did
not promise something temporary or fragile; He promised an eternal inheritance.
God’s covenant is His unbreakable word, guaranteed by His own nature. He will
keep His promise forever to those who belong to Him.
A covenant, biblically
speaking, is a bond in blood sovereignly administered by God alone. Hebrews
6:13–18 explains that when God made His promise to Abraham, He swore by Himself
because there was no one greater by whom He could swear. God essentially placed
His own character as the guarantee of the covenant, declaring, “Surely blessing
I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply you.” After Abraham patiently
endured, he obtained the promise. This shows us that God’s covenants may
involve waiting, but they never fail.
Do we truly grasp the
gravity of this truth? God swore by Himself—by His holiness, His integrity, and
His nature. Hebrews affirms Genesis by showing us that God’s counsel is
immutable, and His promises are confirmed by oath. Throughout Scripture, God
continually proves that He is trustworthy and faithful.
To believe that God is a
covenant keeper, we must first believe what Scripture says about His nature.
Numbers 23:19 declares that God is not a man that He should lie, and Hebrews
6:18 tells us it is impossible for God to lie. If any covenant God made failed,
then Isaiah 55:11—where God says His word will always accomplish what He sends
it to do—would be false. Such a thing is impossible. God’s word is final and
flawless.
God intentionally recorded
His covenants in Scripture as testimonies of His faithfulness. He made a
covenant with Noah, promising never again to destroy the earth by flood
(Genesis 9:11). He called Abraham and promised blessing, multiplication, and
inheritance (Genesis 12:1–3). He established a covenant with Israel through
Moses (Exodus 19:5–6). He promised David an everlasting throne (2 Samuel
7:12–17). He later foretold a New Covenant through Jeremiah, written on human
hearts and fulfilled in Christ (Jeremiah 31:31–34).
Every covenant reveals God’s
initiative. Covenants are not negotiated contracts; they are divine
declarations. They are essentially unilateral—God binds Himself to His word.
Humanity does not co-sign these agreements. God affixes His own signature,
swearing by His name. Because He swears by Himself, every covenant He makes is
secure.
The word “covenant” appears
numerous times in Genesis 17, emphasising its importance. God describes His
covenant as everlasting and unconditional. Jeremiah 33:20–22 highlights this
truth powerfully when God says that if His covenant with day and night cannot
be broken, neither can His covenant with David’s throne. That covenant was
fulfilled in Jesus Christ, the King of kings and the eternal ruler from David’s
line.
God is faithful even when
people are not. His covenants do not fail because human behaviour changes. They
stand because God does not change. When we understand this, our faith deepens
and our confidence in God grows.
Seeing God’s covenant record
throughout Scripture inspires personal trust. When we stand on God’s
promises—whether for salvation, provision, healing, or purpose—we are not
standing on hope alone, but on covenant truth sealed by God’s integrity. God
remains ready, willing, and faithful to fulfil every promise He has made.
He is, and forever will be,
the Covenant Keeper.
