THE FIRE OF GOD’S PRESENCE!
Exodus 3:2 AMP
The Angel of the LORD
appeared to him in a blazing flame of fire from the midst of a bush; and he
looked, and behold, the bush was on fire, yet it was not consumed.
The fire of God’s presence
is one of the most consistent and powerful symbols in Scripture. From Genesis
to Revelation, whenever God draws near, something burns. Not because He
destroys, but because His nature is holy, pure, and utterly unlike anything else.
His fire reveals, refines, and restores. It exposes what is false, ignites what
is dormant, and empowers what is divine within us.
When Moses encountered the
burning bush in Exodus 3, he was not looking for God. He was tending sheep in
the wilderness, living far below the destiny God had prepared for him. Yet the
fire of God’s presence broke into his ordinary day. The bush burned, but it was
not consumed — a picture of what happens when God’s fire touches a yielded
life. His presence does not destroy; it transforms. Moses removed his sandals
because the fire revealed holy ground. In the same way, God’s fire calls us to
remove the sandals of pride, fear, and self‑reliance
so we can stand in the purity of His presence.
Throughout Israel’s journey,
God’s fire remained a visible sign of His nearness. “The Lord went before them
by night in a pillar of fire” according to Exodus 13:21. This fire guided them,
protected them, and reminded them that they were never alone. Even when they
doubted, complained, or rebelled, the fire did not depart. God’s presence is
not fragile; it is faithful. His fire stays even when our faith shakes.
At Mount Sinai, the fire
intensified. “Mount Sinai was wrapped in smoke because the Lord descended upon
it in fire” in Exodus 19:18. The people trembled, but Moses drew near. The same
fire that terrifies the flesh attracts the spirit. Those who hunger for God are
drawn to His flame, not away from it. Isaiah experienced this when a burning
coal touched his lips in Isaiah 6:6–7. The fire did not harm him; it cleansed
him. It removed guilt, broke shame, and commissioned him for divine assignment.
God’s fire always prepares us for purpose.
In the New Testament, the
fire of God’s presence becomes even more intimate. John the Baptist declared, “He
will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire” according to Matthew 3:11.
This was fulfilled in Acts 2 when “tongues of fire” rested on the disciples.
The same God who descended on Sinai now descended into human hearts. The fire
that once shook mountains now ignited ordinary men and women to carry the
Gospel with boldness. This is the miracle of Pentecost — God’s fire no longer
surrounds us; it fills us.
The fire of God’s presence
is not emotional hype or spiritual theatrics. It is the inner working of the
Holy Spirit that purifies motives, deepens hunger, and awakens obedience. It
burns away bitterness, pride, and compromise. It ignites prayer, worship, and
passion for holiness. It empowers us to live as witnesses in a world growing
increasingly cold. As Hebrews 12:29 reminds us, “Our God is a consuming fire.”
Not consuming us but consuming everything that hinders us from becoming who He
created us to be.
Today, the fire of God’s
presence is still available. It meets us in worship, whispers through
Scripture, convicts us in prayer, and strengthens us in weakness. It is not
reserved for the spiritually elite; it is the inheritance of every believer.
When we welcome His fire, we welcome transformation. When we yield to His
presence, we step into purpose. When we allow His flame to burn within us, we
become carriers of His glory in a dark world.
