WRITTEN THREATS!
2 Kings 18–19
Imagine living within the
walls of Jerusalem during the siege of Sennacherib. Fear would have gripped
every household. The Assyrian empire was known for its ruthlessness—they had
already conquered the northern kingdom of Israel and captured many fortified
cities of Judah. Their reputation alone was enough to terrify nations. Reports
of their cruelty were widespread; they humiliated and brutalized their enemies
to instil fear.
Now imagine you are King
Hezekiah. Outside your gates stands a vast, unstoppable army. Inside your city,
people are anxious, resources are limited, and hope seems to be fading. Then
comes the final blow—a written threat. A letter filled with intimidation,
mockery, and blasphemy against the God of Israel. It was not just political
warfare; it was spiritual confrontation.
Many of us can relate to
moments like this. While we may not face invading armies, we have encountered
situations that feel overwhelming, moments when we are outnumbered,
overpowered, and out of options. Perhaps it’s a threatening letter, a medical
report, financial pressure, relationship breakdowns, or words spoken against
you. These “written threats” can shake our faith and stir fear in our hearts.
What did Hezekiah do?
Instead of panicking or
surrendering, he took the letter and went into the house of the Lord. The Bible
records in 2 Kings 19:14 that Hezekiah spread the letter before the Lord. This
act was powerful—it was a visible demonstration of surrender, dependence, and
trust. He wasn’t just praying words; he was presenting evidence. He was saying,
“Lord, look at what is being said. This is beyond me—but not beyond You.”
This is a vital lesson for
every believer. When facing written threats—whether literal or figurative—we
are invited to bring them before God. Lay them out before Him. Do not hide your
fears or pretend strength. Pour out your heart honestly and completely.
In ministry, many have
brought their concerns to the altar—bills, eviction notices, threatening
messages, diagnoses, and broken dreams—and surrendered them to God. Time and
time again, we have seen God intervene in ways that defy human explanation.
Why? Because God responds to faith that trusts Him with everything.
Hezekiah did more than
present the problem—he prayed. His prayer in 2 Kings 19:15–17 acknowledges
God’s sovereignty and power. He didn’t deny the reality of the threat, but he
exalted God above it. He recognized that what seemed impossible for man was still
fully under God’s control.
God’s response came through
the prophet Isaiah. The message was clear: God Himself would fight the battle.
Sennacherib’s arrogance and blasphemy had provoked divine intervention. That
very night, the Lord struck down 185,000 Assyrian soldiers. Without Hezekiah
lifting a sword, victory was secured.
The story does not end
there. Sennacherib eventually returned home in disgrace, and while worshipping
in his temple, he was killed by his own sons in 2 Kings 19:36–37. The same man
who threatened nations fell suddenly, confirming God’s word through Isaiah.
This narrative reminds us of
eternal truths: God is not intimidated by threats. God sees and hears
everything. God fights for those who trust Him.
As Exodus 14:14 declares,
“The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.” Likewise, 2
Chronicles 16:9 reveals that God searches for those whose hearts are fully
committed to Him, that He might show Himself strong on their behalf.
Hezekiah’s victory was not
through military strength—but through dependence on God. His example teaches us
that sometimes the greatest victory comes not from striving harder, but from
surrendering deeper.
Today, what is your “written
threat”? What has been speaking fear into your life? What report, message, or
circumstance keeps you restless?
Bring it to God.
Spread it before Him in
prayer.
Trust Him with the outcome.
And be ready—not only for
deliverance—but for a testimony that will glorify His name.
God is still able. He still
delivers. And He can turn every threat into a testimony of His power and
faithfulness.
REFLECTION QUESTIONS
• What “written threats” am I currently facing, and have I truly
surrendered them to God?
• How can I respond like Hezekiah instead of reacting in fear or
anxiety?
• Do I believe that God can fight my battles—even when the
situation looks impossible?
PRAYER: Oh God of Heaven’s
armies, thank You for fighting my battles and defending me. Arise, Lord,
against every foe that comes against me this year. I surrender every threat
into Your hands. Let Your power be revealed in my life and give me victory for
Your glory. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
