YOU ARE NOT GUILTY!
Romans 8:1-4 GNT
There is no condemnation now
for those who live in union with Christ Jesus. [2] For the law of the Spirit,
which brings us life in union with Christ Jesus, has set me free from the law
of sin and death. [3] What the Law could not do, because human nature was weak,
God did. He condemned sin in human nature by sending his own Son, who came with
a nature like our sinful nature, to do away with sin. [4] God did this so that
the righteous demands of the Law might be fully satisfied in us who live
according to the Spirit, and not according to human nature.
“Guilty!” this should be the
verdict hanging over every human soul. By nature, and by action, we have all
sinned, broken God’s law, and fallen short of His glory. Yet the grace of God
appeared through Christ Jesus, declaring a verdict that no earthly court could
ever pronounce: Not guilty!
According to John 3:18–19,
every unbeliever and every backslider stand guilty before God because they have
not accepted Christ as Saviour. In human courts, a person is considered
innocent until proven guilty. Evidence is gathered, witnesses are called, and a
judge or jury determines the sentence. But in the courts of heaven, God, who
sees all, knows all, and judges righteously—declares the guilty innocent
through the finished work of Christ.
Guilt is not first a
feeling; it is a legal and spiritual condition. Whether or not a person “feels
guilty” does not change their standing before God. Scripture is clear: “There
is none righteous, no, not one” and “all have sinned” see Romans 3:10, 23. We
are guilty by nature and by choice. We have violated God’s moral, ethical, and
spiritual laws, and the penalty for such violations is death (Romans 6:23).
Yet the mercy of God refuses
to leave us condemned. No matter how we arrived at our place of guilt, no
matter how long we have carried the heavy burden of shame, God stands ready to
declare us not guilty when we confess and repent. The first announcement of
this divine acquittal appears in Romans 5:8: “While we were still sinners,
Christ died for us.” Before we ever sought forgiveness, Christ took our
sentence. Before we ever acknowledged our guilt, He stepped into the courtroom
of eternity and accepted the punishment meant for us.
We see this vividly in Luke
23:43. A thief who had spent his entire life breaking moral, judicial, and
spiritual laws received a last-minute pardon. At the very point of execution,
Jesus handed him a divine “get-out-of-jail” card: “Today you will be with Me in
paradise.” The guilty man walked into eternity justified—not because of his
works, but because of Christ’s mercy.
Meanwhile, Satan—the
accuser—continues to shout “Guilty!” over the lives of God’s people. Revelation
12:10 describes him as the one who accuses us day and night, listing our
failures, weaknesses, and sins. He is both prosecutor and adversary, determined
to overthrow us from God’s love. But Christ, our defence attorney, stands in
the gap. He does not deny our sin; He acknowledges it and then presents His own
blood as evidence of our innocence.
2 Corinthians 5:21 reveals
the divine exchange: the guiltless One became sin for the guilty, so that we
might become the righteousness of God. In Romans 3:21–26, Paul explains that
Christ satisfied the demands of justice, enabling God to remain righteous while
declaring sinners righteous. The Judge Himself provided the sacrifice that
acquits the guilty.
Guilt can crush the human
spirit. It can drive a person into despair, shame, and hopelessness. But Romans
8:1 announces a liberating truth: “Because we walk after the Spirit and not
after the flesh, condemnation no longer has legal authority over us. The case
is closed. The charges are dropped. The record is wiped clean.
When we put our trust in
Christ, our sins are forgiven, and we are freed from the eternal consequences
of our wrongdoing (Ephesians 1:7). Jesus becomes our Advocate, and God becomes
our Father. The righteous Judge—whose throne is founded on justice and righteousness
(Psalm 89:14)—has the authority to declare the guilty innocent. And He has
chosen to do so through Christ.
This “not guilty” verdict is
available to everyone. It’s not earned; it is received. It’s not achieved; it
is accepted. Jesus is the only way to stand acquitted before God (John 14:6).
If you have not yet accepted His offer to be your defence attorney, consider
doing so today. And when the enemy tries to remind you of your past, boldly
declare: “God dropped the charges. I am not guilty.”
You are forgiven.
You are redeemed.
You are justified.
You are not guilty.
REFLECTION QUESTIONS
· What
accusations from the enemy have I believed that contradict God’s declaration of
“not guilty”?
· How
does understanding Christ as my defence attorney change the way I view my past
mistakes?
· In
what areas of my life do I still walk in guilt instead of embracing the freedom
of Romans 8:1?
PRAYER: Thank You, Father,
for not charging me as guilty of my spiritual crimes and sins. Thank You for
acquitting me through the blood of Jesus. I receive Your verdict of “not
guilty” and walk in the freedom Christ has purchased for me. In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
