MORE THAN CONQUERORS!
Romans 8:36-39 LSB
Just as it is written, “FOR
YOUR SAKE WE ARE BEING PUT TO DEATH ALL DAY LONG; WE WERE COUNTED AS SHEEP FOR
the SLAUGHTER.” [37] But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through
Him who loved us. [38] For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor
angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, [39]
nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us
from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
A conqueror is someone who
wins a battle and stands in victory after conflict. But Romans 8 does not call
us conquerors—it calls us “more than conquerors” through Christ. This means our
victory is not partial or fragile. It is complete, overwhelming, and secure
because it is rooted in the finished work of Jesus, not in human strength.
Many believers still see
themselves as defeated or delayed because of past wounds or present battles.
But God’s Word declares a greater truth: in Christ, we are not defined by fear,
failure, or struggle. We are defined by His love, His grace, and His victory.
To be more than a conqueror means that even when the fight is real, your
identity in Christ remains unshaken.
Our victory begins with
salvation. Jesus conquered sin, death, and the grave through His sacrifice and
resurrection. Because of Him, we are reconciled to God, empowered to live
righteously, and strengthened to endure whatever life brings. We do not overcome
because we avoid hardship; we overcome because Christ is with us in
hardship—sustaining, refining, and carrying us through. His love gives us
endurance, courage, and hope that cannot be destroyed by outward circumstances.
The trials of life are real
and painful, but they are temporary compared to the eternal glory awaiting
God’s children. Scripture reminds us in 1 Corinthians 15:50 that flesh and
blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God. This helps us remember that suffering
is not the end of the story. God uses pressure to teach dependence, tears to
deepen faith, and testing to form Christlike character. As Paul said in Acts
14:22, we must go through many tribulations to enter the kingdom of God. Yet in
every tribulation, the Lord teaches us how to conquer anything that tries to
pull our hearts away from His love.
No matter how intense the
battle becomes, those who belong to Christ will come out victorious. Why?
Because Jesus has already conquered. His resurrection proves that death,
suffering, and Satan do not have the final word. For everyone who trusts in
Jesus, fear loses its dominion, condemnation is broken, and eternal life is
secured. This is why believers can stand with confidence even in difficult
seasons—our outcome rests in Christ’s triumph.
With God’s love, we do not
merely survive; we overwhelmingly conquer. His love steadies us when emotions
fail, gives peace when the mind is troubled, and reminds us that our lives are
hidden in Christ. God’s love is active, preserving, defending, comforting, and
empowering us daily.
Satan is our adversary, and
he sends many joy-stealing attacks. Romans 8 lists trouble, hardship,
persecution, famine, nakedness, peril, and sword—external pressures and
internal struggles that can make believers feel abandoned. But none of these
can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus. The enemy may fight,
accuse, intimidate, and tempt, but he cannot cancel God’s purpose or steal your
eternal inheritance. In Christ, your salvation is secure, and His love remains
constant in every storm.
We cannot win spiritual
battles by human strength. Psalm 18:29 reminds us that the Lord is our
strength, shield, and deliverer. He equips us with spiritual stamina, renews
our minds through His Word, and gives grace to stand when we would otherwise
fall. Our confidence is not in ourselves but in the God who never loses a
battle.
Life’s battles today may not
be physical, but they are real—battles in the mind, home, health, finances, and
faith. Yet Jesus said in John 16:33, “Be of good cheer; I have overcome the
world.” We fight from victory, not for victory.
So let your confidence
remain in God. Jeremiah 1:19 assures us that the enemy may fight, but he will
not prevail. Isaiah 54:17 declares that no weapon formed against us shall
prosper. Luke 10:19 reminds us that Christ has given us authority over the enemy.
We serve a mighty God who fights for us, so we can pray boldly, live
courageously, resist fear, and walk forward in faith. Nothing can separate us
from the love of God in Christ Jesus. In Him, we are truly more than
conquerors.
