PASS IT ON!
Matthew 10:6-14 NET
Go instead to the lost sheep
of the house of Israel. [7] As you go, preach this message: 'The kingdom of
heaven is near!' [8] Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, cast out
demons. Freely you received, freely give. [9] Do not take gold, silver, or
copper in your belts, [10] no bag for the journey, or an extra tunic, or
sandals or staff, for the worker deserves his provisions. [11] Whenever you
enter a town or village, find out who is worthy there and stay with them until
you leave. [12] As you enter the house, greet those within it. [13] And if the
house is worthy, let your peace come on it, but if it is not worthy, let your
peace return to you. [14] And if anyone will not welcome you or listen to your
message, shake the dust off your feet as you leave that house or that town.
To pass something on simply
means to give to or do for another something that is no longer of use to you,
or something given or done for us and something we are supposed to give to
another person.
We can pass anything on,
positive and good things or negative and bad things; we can pass on physical,
material emotional and spiritual things.
We all have had genes,
family heirlooms, and characters passed on from our lineage. I could say I
passed my looks to my son (who is the male version of me), who knows, he may
pass it on to his children in future.
Verse 8 says freely we have
received, freely give— “pass it on”, we should never hire out what the Lord has
passed on to us freely through his death. We are not to charge money for
dispensing God-given gifts and talents, but we can receive gifts and support
for them.
The gospel is on principle a
life of “pass it on”, if we go by Matthew 25:31-46, we realise that every time
we pass on something to others, we are in effect giving that thing to the Lord
and this should spur us on to do good to all men according to Galatians 6:10
regardless of who they are.
You hear of Christian
leaders who expect to be paid for the privilege of anointing, ordaining, or
mentoring others, how much did they pay to receive what they are charging
others?
Elijah’s journey of passing
on his mantle is documented in 1 Kings 19 as per God’s instructions. Elijah was
depressed, fed up and ready to go home but the Lord would not let him off until
he passed on all the gifts in him, hence from verse 15, we see him pass on to
Hazael, Jehu and finally Elisha-each received specific anointing and grace from
him.
Everything the Lord has
graced us with is meant to be used on earth, so when we die, we go empty of
everything useless in heaven.
Pass it on! Elijah, (as
fiery as it was) didn’t need his anointing where he was going-just like us.
We are meant to pass on
whatever we no longer need to someone else to use.
We learn and study the
scripture but keep the knowledge bottled in when there are people out there
waiting for us to encourage, support, motivate and bless them with it.
Christ has endowed us with
all kinds of gifts, we are filled with the spirit of holiness, called to a
particular work, instructed in that work, and commissioned to go and testify
the Gospel of the grace of God. In effect pass it on!
What have you got that you
can pass on?
What is the Lord is asking
you to pass on and are reluctant to do?
When we get to a stage or
age in life, we begin to think of whom to pass our legacy to, the Lord expects
us to do the same with whatever He gave us because there’s enough for everyone.
Moses in Deuteronomy 34:9
passed his mantle on to Joshua to carry on what he could no longer do.
Sometimes what we are called
to pass on is not only a possession or a position, but also our experience, our
testimony, our wisdom, our compassion and our time. There are people whose
prayers will be strengthened because we shared how God brought us through a
difficult season, and there are others whose path will become clearer because
we took a moment to teach, guide or correct them in love. The enemy often wants
us to believe that what we carry is too small, too ordinary or too personal to
matter, but in the hands of God, even the simplest thing passed on in obedience
can become a seed of transformation in another life. A word of counsel, a
heartfelt prayer, a practical act of kindness, or an encouragement given at the
right time can become a divine answer to someone who has been waiting on the
Lord. When we understand this, we stop seeing our lives as containers to store
blessings and begin to see them as channels through which heaven flows to
others.
Don’t keep it, if it's not
in use, and don’t waste or squander it, if someone else will benefit from it.
Pass it on!
REFLECTION QUESTIONS
·
What has God freely given me that I should
intentionally pass on to someone else?
·
Is there any gift, wisdom, encouragement, or
resource I have been withholding that could bless another person today?
·
Who might God be prompting me to encourage,
mentor, support, or bless with what He has placed in my life?
PRAYER: Heavenly Father,
thank you for anointing and gracing me for your purpose, help me Lord to pass
on whatever I don’t need but is useful to someone else in Jesus’ name. Amen.
