THE OTHER MARY!
Matthew 28:1-6 NET
Now after the Sabbath, at
dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to
look at the tomb. [2] Suddenly there was a severe earthquake, for an angel of
the Lord descending from heaven came and rolled away the stone and sat on it.
[3] His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. [4]
The guards were shaken and became like dead men because they were so afraid of
him. [5] But the angel said to the women, "Do not be afraid; I know that
you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. [6] He is not here, for he has
been raised, just as he said. Come and see the place where he was lying.
There is something
profoundly beautiful about the way Scripture honours people who are often
overlooked. Matthew 28 introduces us again to a woman whose name appears
quietly, consistently, and faithfully— “the other Mary.” She is not Mary the
mother of Jesus, not Mary Magdalene with the dramatic testimony of deliverance,
not Mary of Bethany who sat at Jesus’ feet. She is simply the other Mary—yet
she is present at one of the most defining moments in human history: the
resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Matthew writes, “After the
Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other
Mary went to look at the tomb”. She is not named with titles. She is not
described with exploits. She is not introduced with a backstory. She is simply
there—present, steady, loyal, and seeking Jesus even when everything looked
hopeless.
The faithfulness of the overlooked!
The other Mary represents the countless believers who serve God without
applause. She is the picture of those who remain when the crowds disappear, who
stay when the noise fades, who follow Jesus not for miracles but out of love.
While the disciples scattered in fear, she stayed close. While others hid, she
walked toward the tomb.
Her presence at the tomb
reveals a faith that is not loud but lasting. Proverbs 20:6 says, “Many claim
to have unfailing love, but a faithful person who can find?” The other Mary is
that faithful one. She teaches us that God sees the hidden ones, the quiet
ones, the ones who show up when it is dark, uncertain, or painful.
When the angel descended,
rolled away the stone, and announced the resurrection, the other Mary was there
to witness it. She became one of the first human beings to hear the greatest
proclamation ever spoken: “He is not here; He has risen, just as He said”.
There is always a reward for those who keep showing
up.
This is the divine
pattern—those who stay near Jesus in the dark are the first to see His light.
Those who remain in seasons of silence are the first to hear His new
instructions. Those who keep showing up in obedience are the first to encounter
His glory.
Consider Anna the prophetess
in Luke 2:36–38. She was not a public figure, yet she stayed in the temple for
decades, worshipping, fasting, and praying. Because she remained, she saw the
Messiah when many religious leaders missed Him. God honours consistency.
The other Mary and the ministry
of presence.
Sometimes the greatest
ministry is simply being there. The other Mary did not preach a sermon. She did
not perform a miracle. She did not write an epistle. She showed up. She stood
near the cross in Matthew 27:55–56. She followed Joseph of Arimathea to see
where Jesus was laid in Matthew 27:61. She returned early on resurrection
morning.
Her ministry was
presence—quiet, steadfast, unwavering presence.
In a world obsessed with
platforms, God still honours presence. In a generation that celebrates
visibility, God still rewards faithfulness. Hebrews 6:10 reminds us that God is
not unjust”. Even when people forget
your name, Heaven records your devotion.
When the angel spoke, he did
not call her “the other Mary, though.” Heaven never uses the labels people give
us. Heaven speaks to identity, not reputation. Heaven sees devotion, not
titles. Heaven sees faithfulness, not public recognition. The resurrection reveals
identity!
The resurrection moment
elevated her from obscurity to divine assignment. She and Mary Magdalene were
commissioned to carry the first resurrection message to the disciples. The
overlooked became a messenger. The quiet one became a witness. The faithful one
became a carrier of good news.
This is what the
resurrection still does today—it lifts, reveals, affirms, and sends.
