EVEN THE ELEMENTS AND DEMONS OBEY HIM!

 Mark 4:35-41 NET

On that day, when evening came, Jesus said to his disciples, "Let's go across to the other side of the lake." [36] So after leaving the crowd, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat, and other boats were with him. [37] Now a great windstorm developed and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was nearly swamped. [38] But he was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. They woke him up and said to him, "Teacher, don't you care that we are about to die?" [39] So he got up and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, "Be quiet! Calm down!" Then the wind stopped, and it was dead calm. [40] And he said to them, "Why are you cowardly? Do you still not have faith?" [41] They were overwhelmed by fear and said to one another, "Who then is this? Even the wind and sea obey him!"

The authority of Jesus is not theoretical; it is visible, tangible, and undeniable throughout Scripture. When He walked the earth, creation responded to His voice, storms bowed to His command, and demons trembled at His presence. His authority was not borrowed, negotiated, or inherited from men — it was intrinsic to His divine nature. Everything seen and unseen recognised Him as Lord.

One of the clearest demonstrations of this authority is found in our text, where Jesus calms the storm. The disciples, many of whom were experienced fishermen, were terrified as the waves crashed into their boat. Yet Jesus, awakened from sleep, simply spoke: “Peace, be still.” Instantly, the wind ceased and there was a great calm. The disciples were astonished and asked, “What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey Him?” Creation recognised its Creator.

This moment reveals something profound: the elements respond to the voice of the One who formed them. The wind is not random; the sea is not wild. They exist because He spoke to them into being (Genesis 1). Therefore, when He speaks again, they obey. His authority over nature is not an act of force — it is an act of identity. The storm knew its Master.

Jesus also demonstrated authority over the unseen realm. In Mark 1:23–27, a man with an unclean spirit cried out in the synagogue. The demon recognised Jesus immediately, saying, “I know who You are — the Holy One of God!” Jesus rebuked the spirit, commanding it to come out. The people were amazed and said, “With authority He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him.”

Demons obey Him because they know His supremacy. They know He defeated their master. They know He is the Light that darkness cannot comprehend. They know He is the One before whom every knee must bow (Philippians 2:10). Their obedience is not voluntary; it is compulsory. His presence exposes them, His word expels them, and His authority silences them.

Another powerful example is the encounter with the man possessed by a legion of demons in Mark 5:1–13. A legion could be thousands, yet they begged Jesus not to torment them. They pleaded for permission to enter the herd of pigs. Even in rebellion, demons cannot act without His consent. They recognised His dominion and responded accordingly.

Jesus’ authority extends beyond storms and spirits — it governs sickness, death, and all creation. In Matthew 8:5–13, the centurion understood this when he said, “Only speak a word, and my servant will be healed.” He recognised that Jesus operated in a realm where His word was law. Healing obeyed Him. Disease obeyed Him. The body obeyed Him.

In John 11, Lazarus had been dead for four days. Yet when Jesus called his name, death released him. The grave obeyed Him. Decay obeyed Him. Time obeyed Him. Nothing in creation can resist His command.

Why does this matter for us today?

Because the same Jesus who commanded storms and expelled demons lives in us and works through us. His authority has not diminished. His power has not faded. His dominion has not weakened. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8).

When we face storms — emotional, spiritual, financial, or relational — we are not helpless. The One who calms storms is with us. When we confront darkness, oppression, or spiritual warfare, we do not fight alone. The One before whom demons tremble stands beside us.

His authority is our confidence. His word is our weapon. His presence is our assurance.

The elements obey Him. Demons obey Him. Creation obeys Him. And when we align ourselves with His voice, His authority flows through us to silence storms, break chains, and establish His kingdom.
